Homemade Hoisin Sauce (Paleo, Gluten Free, Dairy Free)

Homemade Hoisin Sauce (Paleo, Gluten Free, Dairy Free)

Since going Paleo, lots of store-bought sauces are not accessible to me anymore. I have been hoarding this bottle of hoisin sauce in my fridge for months. Today, I finally let it go and throw it in the trash.

in the trash it goes

Fortunately for me, I have been able to make a Paleo-friendly version with these ingredients.

Ingredients

It doesn’t look as dark but we don’t use soy bean paste so the color can not be helped. It was really good though and I have used it in tonight’s dinner – General Tso’s Chicken (recipe to follow).

hoisin sauce

You’ll need:

  • 4 TBSP coconut aminos
  • 2 TBSP sunflower seed butter (Check for no added salt or sugar)
  • 1 TBSP raw honey
  • 1 TBSP vinegar
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 TBSP sesame seed oil
  • pinch of pepper
  • Optional: sprinkling of dried chili or chili paste to taste
  1. Combined all ingredients in a bowl and mix until smooth
  2. This makes about 1/2 cup and will store in the fridge for a week

Comments

  1. Looks wonderful ! Could one use almond butter instead of sunflower ?

  2. Christina says

I loved the recipe. However, upon heating the sauce, it didn’t respond to cooking as depicted in your picture. Instead of bubbling – it stuck together in the center of the pan and “hardened”. In addition, you mention that prior to cooking, the hoisin sauce recipe should produce a little less than a cup. Not sure how such little quantities can add up to that much. Any idea what I could have done wrong?

    • Thanks Christina – I think I must have missed out the “1/2”. It should give you about 1/2 cup.

I didn’t cook the hoisin sauce on its own but combined it with other ingredients to make other dishes. Were you heating this up on its own?

  3. Looks delicious! I’ve missed having hoisin sauce…BUT malt vinegar (pictured) is NOT gluten free!

  4. Isn’t Malt Vinegar Gluten though?
